Job Description

Wilbarger General Hospital is seeking an accomplished Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) / Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead our nursing and operational teams with compassion, integrity, and vision.

As a key member of our senior leadership team, the CNO/COO will coordinate and oversee all aspects of nursing care delivery and related clinical services. This executive leader will help shape strategy, ensure operational excellence, and promote a culture of collaboration and excellence consistent with the hospital’s mission and values.

This is a pivotal role for an experienced nurse executive who thrives in a rural community hospital setting , values strong relationships with staff and physicians, and is passionate about advancing high-quality, cost-effective care.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO and CFO to assess and implement hospital strategic priorities and long-term growth opportunities.
  • Oversee hospital operations, including ancillary, diagnostic, support, quality, and facility services.
  • Drive initiatives that improve operational performance, service quality, and patient experience.
  • Ensure financial success, accreditation readiness, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Clinical Excellence

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all nursing departments and clinical teams.
  • Establish and maintain standards of care, nursing policies, and evidence-based practices.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and excellence in patient care.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration between nursing, physicians, and other hospital departments.

Operational Oversight

  • Supervise department managers, ensuring effective staffing, budgeting, and performance management.
  • Monitor monthly departmental budgets and address variances proactively.
  • Participate in the development of annual operational and capital budgets.
  • Support implementation of organizational change while fostering engagement and accountability.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with infection control, quality assurance, and safety initiatives.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety by identifying risks and unsafe practices, supporting improvement initiatives, and ensuring adherence to hand hygiene and risk-reduction protocols.
  • Maintain readiness for regulatory and accreditation surveys.

People & Culture

  • Model open, transparent, and collegial leadership.
  • Mentor and develop emerging nursing leaders.
  • Encourage teamwork, respect, and professional growth across all clinical disciplines.
  • Maintain confidentiality and a positive employee and patient relations environment.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse license (Texas Board of Nursing).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) required.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of professional nursing experience in a hospital setting.
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership experience in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Proven success in team leadership, mentoring, and cultivating a culture of excellence.
  • Experience living and working in a rural healthcare environment preferred.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Advanced understanding of nursing theory, evidence-based practice, and healthcare operations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and hospital information systems.
  • Familiarity with staffing models, patient acuity management, contract negotiation, and service excellence.
